"Mother Gothel’s design makes me uncomfortable. Her dark, thick, curly hair, her sharp nose, and the way her features are generally perceived as more "ethnic" in comparison to all the other human characters in Tangled—it all reminds me of an archetype for Jewish women"
Interesting fact: The stereotypical witch found in fairy tales was usually portrayed as the stereotypical Jew in order to spread anti Semitic propaganda.
This is also where we get the “greedy Jew” stereotype, as goblins, hobgoblins, gnomes and dwarves were also portrayed as the harmful Jewish archetype.
In the middle ages, it was a sin for a Christian to hoard or handle large amounts of money, which left the profitable banking industry open to Jews. It’s ridiculous that Christians created the stereotype to avoid a sin, and this stereotype is still portrayed and spread today
im not down with wdc putting a lightened pic of Mother Gothel as proof of this neither like
this is what she ACTUALLY looks like, and i think this picture really shows how they’re supposed to be contrasted. Mother Gothel not only has a ‘sharp’ nose, its also large/curved and not rounded and ~Aryan~ like rapunzel’s. her eyebrows and hair are dark/thicker/curly, her hands are larger, her skin doesnt “glow,” etc.
in certain scenes of the movie, when rapunzel & gothel are both making ‘ugly’ snarling faces, Gothel’s lines near her nose are much thicker (making her nose look larger/more hooked), while Rapunzel’s are softened so as not to ruin the image of aryan beauty. it isnt even HIDDEN tbh.
oh and she’s Super Greedy and only concerned with staying alive forever, with magic. plus honestly the entire Smothering Mother thing—i cant with this g-ddamn movie anyway im gonna go read
